If the student has uploaded a PDF, docx or odt file, or if you set 'Comment inline' for an online text submission, then their submission will be displayed on the grading screen, allowing you to annotate it, using a variety of tools, stamps (if uploaded by the admin) and comments which may be saved to a comments bank. When the annotations are complete, clicking to save the changes will result in it being displayed to the student as part of their feedback.
It is a great feature but not everyone likes it. Personally me, I don't really like the new grading page design as you cannot see the previous attempts straight away and when the PDF annotation is on, the default layout shows the review panel not the grading panel.
Let see what we can do about it.
Access the old style grading page
When you are on a grading page the URL in your browser looks like this:
Simply change the word: grader in the link to grade
Now you see the old style grading page including previous attempts at the bottom of the page.
Enable/Disable PDF annotation
Dashboard / ► Site administration / ► Plugins / ► Activity modules / ► Assignment / ► Feedback plugins / ► Manage assignment feedback plugins
and click on the eye icon.
If it is ON click on Settings.
If it doesn't work, go to System paths and ask your system administrator to fix it.
You can also use other converters, for example Unoconv by LibreOffice (in 3.2 onwards) or Drive Converter by Google (in 3.3 onwards).
How to change the default layout by CSS
When the PDF annotation is enabled and you go to the grading page, the default layout shows the review panel and the grading panel is collapsed. The review panel or the grading panel may be collapsed by clicking the icons at the bottom right of the screen.
If most of the teachers do NOT wish to use the annotation, the default layout might be disturbing or annoying. Unfortunately you cannot change the default layout in the settings, not even on the site level, so we need to use some tricks again.
Go to the usual place:
Dashboard / ► Site administration / ► Appearance / ► Additional HTML
and add the following JQuery code to the Within HEAD section.
The most important parts are in line 9, 10 and 11.
